There are ways to move further faster towards your goals, knowing what to do and why.
You need a few things:
- A clear vision that informs your communication
- Effective strategy that gets you from where you are to where you want to be
- Messaging that galvanizes people into action
- Leadership skills that bring people together and empower everyone on the team
- Resilience to stay the course without burning out
Gill's story
When I started working at an environmental NGO I felt like a complete newbie. Even though I had 25 years of relevant experience, there were so many aspects of advocacy work I'd never done. I was part of a new team employed to revitalize a major campaign that had lost momentum. The boss was hugely strategic, which was fortunate for everyone, not least for me.
We worked closely together and we learned what worked and what didn't. We talked strategy for days on end, clarifying fuzzy ideas through long, intense conversations, and we made strides because we were pro-active, well-informed, flexible and ready to respond. No matter what happened.
I took over as Director at a pivotal time, playing a leading role in the campaign which was run collaboratively with First Nations. The campaign became a national and international success story as government's attempt to quash First Nation treaties was overturned in a protracted court battle, creating one of the largest protected areas in North America.

As advocates, we often have to message complex and controversial subjects in a way that engages people and inspires them to act.

"Time and again, Gill's coaching gave me 'aha!' moments that I integrated into my daily work. I now view and improve all of my work through the lens of Gill's training program. " Randi, manager at environmental NGO.
"I was frustrated that people were not interested in embracing ambitious goals but, having done Gill's coaching program, I understand why my approach didn't work, and what to do instead. I've already begun to see results." JP, engineer and renewable energy advocate.
"One of the challenges I face is communicating science-based ideas and findings to non-scientists. Gill's insightful questioning and guidance has been invaluable in helping me improve my communications skills so that I can better advocate for my work." Kim, conservation scientist and advocate.
"Gill offers a perspective you won't find in most places of work, or even at the best universities. She has a talent at getting to the heart of key factors that will help drive everyone's success at making the change they wish to see in the world." Joanna, biologist/advocate
